i love treats. i love talking about treats, i love treating people to treats, i love baking treats, i love planning treats. the word treat just evokes a whimsical sparkly feeling-the way you felt as a kid when you knew you were getting that McDonalds ice cream cone after school. one of my true friends to the core, emily, really was my partner in the treat life of crime...during grad school, let’s just say treat time was in short supply due to absurd amounts of class hours, but on the very rare occasion that a treat was of the essence, emily was all in. no holds barred. as in, it was time to hit yo-town fro-town. it was actually called yogurt zone, but i took issue with that name and dubbed it yogurt town (cue hilarity ensuing with our self-acclaimed spin-off names).
emily and i have had our places that we go (i.e. hanasho for sushi, sake, and huge globs of wasabi-becuase we like the sinuses being cleared in one fell swoop), but as we have matured (code for having to start watching our dollars), we have had to fine-tune our treatings. they are now the occasional redbox rental for the latest nanny McPhee delight or Zac Efron flick (a big trip to treatville for us), oreos, beer and on the big days, yo town. let’s just say we have the refined palates of five-year-olds and the reason we love yo town is because of the absurd amounts of candy toppings available. the yogurt, for emily and i, is simply a sweet, cold vehicle to unite a heaping bowl of candy together. fruit toppings. what are those? heaping spoonfulls of oreos. that is what we are all about. the list could go very well on. suffice it to say, we perfected our execution of the perfect bowl and every single time i finished, i could have gone for more. and that’s treats.
yesterday was a treat day. no question. i got to see li and soph, a treat that keeps on treating.
to top it all off with a red swedish fish, we were joined by max, eva and adrienne; my wonderful co-aunts and uncles who douse the dumpling with love and watch with me as she drinks it up like a little rose growing in the glorious garden of family.
treats coming out the yin yang. we did it right with a froyo trip to rival yotown. the toppings: unbeatable. the company: priceless. watching sophia inhale as much red velvet yogurt her mama would let her: now that is a real treat.
i drove home in the rain and traffic which was fine but for the fact that christina needed her vehicular transport a solid hour before i got it to her. i was inconsiderate and i did not ask. i had a one-track mind bent on treats and my selfishness did not help the matter. she took it with grace and class, but i felt bad so i decided to take a walk down west and have a talk with Jesus, and what did my eyes behold not 5 minutes into my walk of shame?
a DOUBLE rainbow to be exact. and this was a straight up fairy tale didn’t believe they really could be this perfect in real life rainbow. like all that was missing was the leprechaun and the pot o’ gold. and the care bears, my little ponies, rainbow brite and strawberry shortcake. and probably some dancing and singing sunflowers. and a unicorn. hey, go big or go home.
have you ever wanted to drink something, slide down that same thing and marvel at it until your mind was literally blown all at the same time before? i now can say that i have. i wanted to put a straw to that sucker and go to town. but it would have been the perfect rainbow slide, too. and the ideal spot right at the top to sit and marvel at the sublime splendor of a sky that could hold lightning, sunshine, rain, dark clouds, and rainbows all at once. no lie. that is what was happening.
i love that the rainbow in the Old Testament, and to myself consequently, is what God used to make a covenant with Noah that He would never destroy the earth by flood again. if i was alive way back when things like rainbows were being discovered, the rainbow would have to be for something that beautiful and special with God.
when i see them, i feel God is giving me something beautiful and important. Hope. He is saying all will be well, and i Love you no matter how selfish you are. i Love you no matter what. and i give you rainbows because i Love you and that is all. never because you earned it. i could never earn a rainbow, so He just gives ‘em out for free and then waits for you at the end to Love you some more.
treats treats and more treats was the order of the day.
i love what rain does to the world. i love that the world looks so completely different and i love being reminded of blue skies at the end of rain. because sometimes i forget about how perfect they really are. i love that the greens are greener and that it makes my cinnamon roses smell sweeter and turn a richer, darker hue of crimson.
God is very generous.
i swam home on the walk back. hello virginia humidity, how are you this fine evening? and christina made her glass of inconsiderate sister half full and found the good in me being an hour late. all is well.
happy weekend. i hope it is filled with treats and that you drink it up through a straw in a cup of rainbow juice. because God Loves you.
emily and i with a few dozen trips to yotown under our belts. emily also has 2 chilluns under her belt which i find even more impressive. |
